Why you should drive a Fiat electric car

FIAT is widely known for their fun, affordable and desirable small cars. The FIAT 500 in particular has been a best seller around the world for years now! But what about their EVs?

Packed with the latest driving tech, including a fantastic one-pedal-driving mode, FIAT are taking the electrification of their next generation cars very seriously. With driving fun and that familiar Italian design at the heart of everything they’re doing, the future of FIATs EVs is something special indeed.

Right now though, the FIAT 500e is their electric model on sale in the UK. But that’s no bad thing, because it’s one of our favourite small city cars on the road.

Three reasons why you should drive a FIAT EV:

  • They have an excellent one-pedal-driving system
  • They charge quickly for such a small EV (great for city hoppers!)
  • They’re affordable but full of tech

Considering a FIAT but still on the fence? Let us outline why you should try a FIAT electric car.

How long has Fiat been producing EVs?

The first Fiat electric car – a previous generation 500e – was announced in 2012, with sales starting the following year in California. At the time, the US was the only country where the 500e was sold, with Fiat announcing they wouldn’t make it available in Europe (gutted, frankly).

The first electric FIAT 500 could only do 87 miles in one charge. The latest and current version can do double that in the real world!

However, with the unveiling of the New Fiat 500e in 2020, European and UK drivers would finally be given the chance to drive a Fiat 500 electric of their own – and enjoy all the great features the Fiat 500e has to offer.

FIAT have announced that they will only produce electric cars from the year 2030, coinciding with the UK government’s announcement that the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned in the same year. Plus, the new FIAT 600 is in pre-production at the moment. We expect that to share parts and batteries with the Jeep Avenger.

FIAT electric cars range

What FIAT electric car can you get? Well, it’s quite simple in 2023:

  • 500e – their iconic small car electrified. Available in various trims, the FIAT 500e is a brilliant small electric car that’s fast, fun and fabulously stylish. It makes for a great companion to city life but is also more than capable at higher speeds too. Plus, it comes full of kit to keep you entertained on those longer journeys, with an excellent infotainment system.
  • 500e C – like the normal 500e, but without the roof! A folding fabric convertible, the 500e Cabriolet comes with the sky as standard.
  • 600 – (coming soon!) the replacement for the outgoing 500X SUV and 500L MPV, this new all-electric model from FIAT will share battery tech and motors with the Jeep Avenger.

Why driving an EV is great

If you want to take driving to the next level and not have to worry about exhaustive maintenance, an electric car could be the way to go for you. It benefits not only you as the driver but also the environment.

While FIAT produce great petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, the benefits of an electric FIAT mean they’re the perfect choice for drivers looking to make the switch:

  • There are far fewer moving parts in an EV, which means maintaining them is cheaper and there’s less that can potentially go wrong
  • Charging an EV is quick and simple – by using a rapid charge point, you can charge your EV’s battery to 80% in as little as 25 minutes
  • EVs are far kinder to the environment, and by using green energy to charge the battery they can be completely carbon neutral after manufacture
  • Compared to petrol and diesel, the cost of charging an EV is considerably cheaper than a tank of fuel

Why Fiat produces excellent EVs

While Fiat may not currently have a wide range of EVs, this will change by 2030. That said, the 500e is a fantastic little car that’s affordable and a joy to live with.

Here are five reasons why Fiat electric cars should be high on your list of considerations.

1. They’re iconic

The 500e retains that classic FIAT 500 design but modernises it brilliantly. If you want to look good as you cruise about town, not many other small EVs come close to the little FIAT.

2. They’re perfect for the city

Driving in a city can be stressful, right? Let the 500e do all the hard work for you. An excellent one-pedal-driving system means, once you’re used to it, you could never have to touch the brakes at all. Quick and light but accurate steering mated with that peppy electric motors means the 500e is really easy to dart in and out of traffic with. Plus, fast charging means a 5-minute charge will provide 30 miles of range, ideal for a trip into town or spending a day at the office.

3. They’re not that expensive when you think about it

Yes, other rivals of a similar price might be bigger, but not many offer the same amount of fun or such a timeless design as the FIAT. And let’s not forget, it’s electric, so running costs will be low too.

4. They’re full of clever features

All FIAT 500e cars come with one of the best infotainment systems on any small car right now; fast to respond and easy to use, it can come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard on some trims and the driving tech available is genuinely helpful. Get the Cabrio and you’ll love the clever folding roof, too.

5. Fun to drive

After something that’s not just quirky and interesting to look at, but loads of fun to drive too? The FIAT 500e is guaranteed to put a smile on your face with its peppy motor and unique handling characteristics. A track monster it’s not, but that only adds to its charm. Think adorable, exciteable puppy and you’re pretty much there.

Fiat EVs on Subscription

Buying any electric car can be difficult, especially right now. Plus, buying means depreciation as soon as you’re off the forecourt.

However, an alternative to buying is a FIAT subscription through elmo.

An elmo electric car subscription includes comprehensive insurance, servicing and maintenance, fair wear and tear for tyres and even breakdown cover, meaning accessing a Peugeot EV of your own is easier and more affordable than ever.
