Why you should drive a Fiat electric car

Fiat is known for its slick and affordable petrol and diesel cars, but it has made a grand entrance into the EV game.

So, if you’re looking for all the benefits of an EV but with a smaller budget, then a Fiat might be exactly what you’re after.

How long has Fiat been producing EVs?

The first Fiat electric car – the Fiat 500e – was announced in 2012, with sales starting the following year in California. At the time, the US was the only country where the 500e was sold, with Fiat announcing they wouldn’t make it available in Europe.

However, with the unveiling of the New Fiat 500e in 2020, European drivers would finally be given the chance to drive a Fiat EV of their own – and enjoy all the great features the Fiat 500e has to offer.

Now, Fiat has announced that they will only produce electric cars from the year 2030. This coincides with the UK government’s announcement that the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned in the same year.

Why driving an EV is great

There are plenty of reasons why driving an electric car is great, and benefits not only you as the driver, but also the environment.

While Fiat produces great petrol and diesel cars, the benefits of an EV mean they’re the perfect choice for drivers looking to make the switch to electric:

  • There are far fewer moving parts in an EV, which means maintaining them is cheaper and there’s less that can potentially go wrong
  • Charging an EV is quick and simple – by using a rapid charge point, you can charge your EV’s battery to 80% in as little as 20 minutes
  • EVs are far kinder to the environment, and by using green energy to charge the battery they can be completely carbon neutral after manufacture
  • Compared to petrol and diesel, the cost of charging an EV is considerably cheaper than a tank of fuel

Why Fiat produces excellent EVs

While Fiat may not currently have a wide range of EVs, this will change by 2030. However, the EVs they do currently produce are slick, affordable, and a joy to drive.

Here are five reasons why Fiat electric cars should be high on your list of considerations.

 1. Retains the Fiat 500 look

The Fiat 500 has always had a distinct curved design making it instantly recognisable, and the 500 electric is no different. It retains that iconic design, which Forbes even described as ‘cute’.

 2. Perfect for city driving

Fast charge means a 5-minute charge will provide 30 miles of range, ideal for a trip into town or spending a day at the office. When fully charged, the range of a 500 electric goes up to 199 miles.

 3. An affordable introduction to EVs

With an affordable price tag, Fiat electric cars mean EVs are more accessible than ever before for money and eco-conscious drivers.

 4. Plenty of modern features

Despite the price tag, Fiat EVs are still loaded with modern tech and features, including an infotainment centre, and a preheated interior while plugged in.

 5. Fun to drive

Fiats are nippy and agile thanks to great acceleration and handling, which makes them a lot of fun to drive.

Fiat EVs on Subscription

While the cost of buying a Fiat EV is reasonable, it still requires a large deposit, which can prevent eager drivers from taking home a 500e of their own.

However, an alternative to buying is a Fiat subscription through elmo.

An elmo electric car subscription includes insurance, service, MOT, and breakdown cover costs, meaning driving a Fiat EV of your own is more affordable than ever.
