A serious contender in a crowded market

Family friendly but affordable cars are in high demand right now, with plenty to choose from. Some go down the stylish but not-as-practical route, while others go straight for form following function – that’s where the MG5 sits.

MG are on a roll at the moment, with the highly anticipated MG4 hatchback and the already widely loved MG ZS EV SUV. But what about if out and out space is your priority? That’s where the MG5 fills a void. The pre-facelift versions we have at elmo was the original all-electric-estate car, packing plenty of space and power in a genuinely affordable package.

Range and charging

The MG5 Long Range comes with a 61kWh battery pack, good for 210 miles in the real-world.

It will charge at up to 80kW, meaning it will take just 42 minutes to get from 10-80% charge (or add approximately 145 miles of range).

Interior and trim levels

Inside, the MG5 is function and form over anything else. All the controls are simply laid out, easy to find and use while driving and have a decent quality to them.

Our versions of the MG5 come in two trims: ‘Excite’ or the slightly upgraded ‘Exclusive’. Excite comes with fabric seats and a leather steering wheel, with Exclusive adding heated leather style front seats and driver’s seat lumbar adjustment. All MG5s also come with a 6-speaker audio system, Sat Nav and 4x USB ports in the cabin as standard.

Boot space is also very generous, with 464 litres on offer seats up, and 1,456 litres seats down. For context, that’s nearly 200 litres more than a brand-new Volkswagen Golf.

Key features

Both trim levels give you MGs updated MG Pilot driver assist system, with Active Emergency Braking as standard.

Both Excite and Exclusive models also come with an 8” touchscreen with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay and 6 speaker audio system with 3D sound as standard

‘Exclusive’ also adds rain sensing wipers so you’ll never even need to reach for the wiper stalk.

Here’s a summary of the key features per trim:

Adaptive cruise control, satellite navigation, 7” digital instrument display and push-button start
4x USB ports, air conditioning, rear parking camera and leather steering wheel
